Hi, I’m En Kim from Philosophy Department. Actually, I'm a shy person. I’m much older than you, furthermore, my pronunciation is not good enough, so I’m very nervous, now. But I’ll  try  my best.
 
 
 
I am a novelist. I am mainly confined in my study at home, sometimes I work in a cafe with my notebook computer. As a novelist, I have to read many books, listen carefully others, think a lot about the world, also collect data for writing, and then write stories, even sometimes I send my stories to the publisher. Even when I'm ready to write, it’s not easy to start writing, either. In some cases, I have to tear my works off that were written over several months. It will be sad and painful. But I feel my life sparkle like stars in the night sky when I'm writing something, and it’s full of meaning for me. Sometimes I can create wonderful worlds where each other works for each other without pain. also I can even throw a party and sing and dance along to the music while eating delicious food and drinking some wine. There, I can meet Anne of Green Gables, Pippi from the New Adventures Of Pippi Longstocking, Tetsuro, Chulee in Korean name and Maetel from Galaxy Express 999, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Little Prince, Harry Potter and many fantastic young wizards. Even I can say hello to many of my heroes, some of great, great jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrain, Albert Ayler, Louis Armstrong(What a wonderful world), Chet Baker(My funny valentine, Sweet comic valentine, You make me smile with my heart), Gary Peacock. Chalie Haden, also Billy Holiday, and Ella Fitzereld. Maybe some of you can creat a fantastic world like me, if you want. You can be a king or a queen, an idol star or a movie star, or Alone Musk or Mark Zuckerberg. Though imaginary, what a wonderful job it is!

학생들 앞에 서서 발표까지 해야 하는데 과연 제 차례가 올지는 모르겠어요.
 
간단한 숙제이기는 하지만 발표하기란 쉽지 않을 것 같아요. 60여 명 가까이 가득 찬 교실에서. 또 생각해보니 전 말을 하는 것보다 글로 쓰는 것이 훨씬 쉬운 것 같아요. 말은 두서가 없어서 곧잘 실수를 해요. 꼭 발표 같은 것이 아니더라도 평소 가족이나 친구들 사이에 의견 교환을 할 때조차도 가끔 핵심을 잊어버리곤 하지요. 그래서 약간 말에 대한 공포가 있어요. 그러나 글을 쓰게 되면 차분히 생각을 하게 되고 또 고칠 수 있어 한결 수월한 것 같은데요.
 
이런 과제를 하고 있으니, 제 젊은 시절 한 때가 생각나는군요. 89년 처음으로 여행사 설립을 위해 방콕에 갔는데 영어도, 일어도, 태국어도 잘 못했잖아요. 그곳 소식도 궁금해 Bangkok Post지를 하나 샀어요. 헐, 헤드라인조차 못 읽는 제가 참으로 한심했죠. 그때부터 일하는 틈틈이 태국어를 읽고 쓰고, 영어 학원을 다니기 시작했어요. 영어 학원을 다니다 보니 더 영어를 배워야겠다는 의욕이 생기더군요.
 
3년 동안의 방콕 근무를 마치고 서울서 여행사에 다니는 지인에게 물었어요. 영어를 본격적으로 배우고 싶은데, 미국, 영국 어디로 갈까? 지인은 미국은 워낙 위험하고 영국은 인종차별이 너무 심하다며 호주 시드니를 추천했죠.
 
결국 시드니 랭귀지스쿨에 등록해 6개월을 배우고 다음 비즈니스 칼리지(비자 연장을 위해), 투어리즘을 배우는 곳으로 이동했어요. 랭귀지 스쿨의 교수는 좀 특별했어요. 야간에 드럼을 연주하는 재즈 뮤지션이었고 수업 또한 특이한 방식(당시에는)으로 했는데, 예를 들자면 수업 중에 엘비스 프레슬리에 대해 아는 것을 말해보자는 식으로 프리 토킹을 많이 시도하셨죠. 참 많이 도움이 된 듯해요. 일주일을 남기고 교수님은 영어 에세이 쓰기를 과제로 내주셨어요. 전 Sudden trip이라는 제목의 에세이를 썼는데 많은 칭찬을 받은 것 같아요. 귀국할 때 가지고 온 원고를 아무리 찾으려 해도 없어 아쉽지만, 그때의 기억만은 또렷하고요.
 
그것을 계기로 저는 언제든 영어로 소설을 써야겠다는 꿈을 가지게 되었죠. 글쎄, 대학 4년 동안 이루어질 수 있을지요?
