I knew these people in PARIS, TEXAS

이 이야기는 영화 파리텍사스의 주인공 트래비스로 분한 해디 딘 스탠튼의 목소리로 들을 수 있다. 그의 목소리가 그리워 가끔씩 듣곤 하는데...

 

이 남자의 이름은 트래비스(해리 딘 스탠튼). 기억상실에 실어증까지 걸려버린 트래비스는 동생의 4년만에 상봉한 아들과 함께 떠나버린 아내를 찾아나서게 된다. 양자로 입양시킨 아들의 부양비를 아내 제인(나스타샤 킨스키)이 어디에선가 매달 입금해 오고 있는 은행에서 무작정 기다리다 결국 그녀를 발견해 그토록 그리워하던 아내를 만나게 되는 곳은 바로 환락가이다. 손님은 여자를 볼 수 있고, 여자는 손님을 볼 수 없는 유리벽이 있는 방에서 손님으로 가장한 트래비스는 아내를 만난다.  아내는 얼굴도 보지 못하는 이 손님의 사연을 기꺼이 들어주겠다고 하고, 트래비스는 자신과 제인의 이야기를 해준다. 이야기를 듣고서 뒤늦게 트래비스가 찾아온 것을 알고 안타까워 하는 제인. 결국 트래비스는 아들과 엄마의 극적인 만남을 주선만 해주고 그는 어디론가 떠난다.

 

 

I knew these people, these two people.

They were in love with each other.

The girl was very young about 17 or 18, I guess.

And the guy was quite a bit older

And he was kind of ragged and wild

And she was very beautiful, you know

And together they turned everything into a kind of an adventure.

And she liked that just an ordinary trip down to the grocery store was full of adventure

And they were always laughing at stupid things

He liked to make her laugh and they didn't much care for anything else.

Because all they wanted to do was be with each other.

They were always together

And he, he loved her more than he ever felt possible.

He couldn't stand being away from her, even though the day when he went to work

So he quit, just to be home with her.

Then he's get another job when the money ran out,

And they he'd quit again.

But pretty soon she started to worry.

Money, I guess. Not haveing enough, Not knowing when the next check was coming in.

Yeah, I know that feeling.

So he started to get kind of torn inside

How do you mean?

Well, he knew he had to work support her.

But he couldn't stand being away from her either.

 

 

I see.

 

And the more he was away from her.

The crazier he got, Except now , He got really crazy

He started inagining all kind of things.

 

Like what?

 

He started thinking that she was seeing other men on the sly.

He'd come home from work and accuse her of spending the day with somebody else.

He'd yell at her and break things in the trailer.

 

Trailer?

 

Yes. They lived in a trailer home, anyway he started to drink real bad.

And He'd stay out late to test her, to see if She'd ger jealous he wanted her to get jealous. But.

But that got him even madder.

He thought if she never got jealous of him.

That she didn't really care about him.

Jealousy was a sign of her love for him.

And then one night. one night she told him that she was pregrant.

She was about three or four months pregnant.

And stopped drinking, got a stead job.

He was convinced that she loved him new because she was carrying his child.

And he was going to dedicate himself to making home for her.

But a funny thing started to happen.

He didn't even notice is at first. she started to change

And the day the baby was born.

She began to ger irritated with everything around her.

She got mad at everything.

Even the baby seemed to be an injustice to her.

He kept trying to make everything all right for her.

Buy her things, Take her out to dinner once a week.

But nothing seemed to satisfy her.

For two years, he struggled to put them back together like they were when then first met.

Finally, he knew that it was never gonna wor out

So he hit he bottle again.

But this time it got mean.

This time when he came home late at night, she wasn't worried about him or jealous.

Sje was just enraged.

She accused him of holding her captive, by making her have baby.

She told him that she dreamed about escaping.

She saw herself at night running naked down the highway.

Running across fields, Running down river beds.

Always running.

And always when she was about to get away, he'd be there.

He would stop her somehow,

He would just appear and stop her.

And when she told him these dreams, he belived them.

He knew she had to be stopped, or she'd leave him forever.

So he tied a cowbell to her ankle  so he could hear at night if she tried to get out of bed.

But she learned how to muffle the bell by stuffing a sock into it and inching her way out of the bed

and into the night.

He caught her one night when the sock fell out he heard her trying to run to the highway.

He caugh her and dragged her back to the trailer and tied her to the stove with his belt.

He just left her there and went back to bed and laid there listening to her scream  and hi listened to her son  scream.

And he was surprised at himself, because he didn't feel anything anymore.

All he wanted to do was sleep.

And fo the first time, he wished the were for away lost in a deep vast country, where nobody knew him.

Somewhere wihout language or streets.

And he dreamed about this place without knowing its name, and when he woke up, he was on fire.

There were blue flames burning the streets of his bed.

He ran through the glames toward the only two people h loved, but they were gone.

His arms were burning and he threw himself outside and rolled on the wet ground.

Then he ran.

He never looked back at the fire.

He just ran. He ran until the sun came up.

And he couldn't run away further.

And when the sun went down, he ran again.

For five days he ran like this, until every sign of man had disappeared.
