악은 우리의 선택에서 시작된다?

 

우리가 매일 하는 선택들은 아주 작아 보이지만 그 안에는 큰 힘이 숨어 있습니다. 오늘 아침에 무엇을 먹을지, 친구에게 어떤 말을 할 지, 숙제를 할 지 말지…… 이 모든 것이 바로 자유의지로 하는 선택입니다. 자유의지란 누구의 강요도 없이 스스로 선택할 수 있는 힘을 말합니다. 엄마가 시켜서가 아니라 내가 스스로 숙제를 하기로 결정한다면 그것이 바로 자유의지예요. 하지만 자유의지는 단순히 '내 마음대로 하는 것'과는 달라요. 내가 내린 결정에는 책임이 따라오기 때문이에요. 만약 내가 학교에서 친구의 연필을 훔친다면, 그건 내 자유의지로 한 선택이지만 그 행동에 대한 책임은 결국 나에게 돌아옵니다.

악은 갑자기 하늘에서 떨어지는 것이 아니에요. 누군가의 선택에서 시작됩니다. 예를 들어, 어떤 친구가 내게 장난을 쳤다고 해서 나도 그 친구를 세게 밀치거나 욕을 한다면, 그건 나의 자유의지로 한 행동이죠. 그 순간 나는 악을 선택한 것입니다. 즉, 악은 우리 마음속에 있는 선택지 중 하나예요. 선을 택할 수도 있고, 악을 택할 수도 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 길을 택하느냐에 따라 결과가 달라지죠.

만약 세상에 악이 전혀 없고, 모두가 착하기만 하다면 어떨까요? 겉으로는 좋은 세상 같아 보이지만, 사실은 선택할 자유가 없는 세상이에요. 예를 들어, 컴퓨터는 절대 친구를 미워하지 않아요. 하지만 그건 컴퓨터가 착해서가 아니라, 선택할 힘이 없기 때문이에요. 우리가 자유롭게 선택할 수 있다는 건 때때로 잘못된 선택도 할 수 있다는 뜻이기도 합니다.

악이 자유의지에서 나온다고 해서 우리가 꼭 악을 선택해야 하는 건 아니에요. 오히려 우리는 자유롭게 선을 선택할 수 있는 힘을 가졌습니다. 친구가 내 마음을 상하게 했을 때 화를 내는 대신 대화하기, 내가 원하는 걸 얻기 위해 훔치는 대신 정직하게 구하기, 힘든 일이 있을 때 도망치는 대신 용기 내어 맞서기. 이런 선택을 반복할수록 우리의 자유의지는 악이 아닌 선의 길로 나아가게 됩니다.

자유의지는 우리가 세상을 살아가는 핸들과 같아요. 핸들을 어느 방향으로 돌리느냐에 따라 차가 어디로 가는지가 달라지듯, 우리의 선택이 세상을 어떤 모습으로 만들지를 결정합니다. 악은 자유의지에서 태어나지만, 그 자유의지를 어떻게 사용하느냐는 우리의 몫입니다. 오늘 내가 내리는 작은 선택 하나가 내일의 나, 그리고 세상의 모습을 바꿀 수 있다는 것을 기억하세요.

Does evil begin with our choices?

The choices we make every day may seem very small, but each one holds great power.

What to eat for breakfast, what to say to a friend, whether to do homework or not…

All of these are decisions made through free will.

Free will is the ability to choose for yourself without any force or coercion from others.

If you decide to do your homework not because your mother told you to, but because you chose to,

that is free will.

However, free will is not simply the same as "doing whatever I want."

This is because every decision we make carries responsibility.

If I steal a friend’s pencil at school, that action comes from my free will,

but the responsibility for it comes back to me.

Evil does not suddenly fall from the sky.

It begins with someone’s choice.

For example, if a friend plays a joke on me and I push them hard or yell at them,

that is my free will at work.

At that very moment, I chose evil.

In other words, evil is one of the options in our hearts.

We can choose good, or we can choose evil.

The outcome depends on which path we take.

What if there were no evil in the world, and everyone was always good?

At first, it might seem like a wonderful world,

but in reality, it would be a world without the freedom to choose.

For instance, a computer never hates anyone.

But that’s not because the computer is kind—

it’s because it has no power to choose.

Our ability to choose freely also means that sometimes we can make mistakes or bad decisions.

Just because evil comes from free will does not mean we are destined to choose evil.

In fact, we also have the power to freely choose good.

Instead of getting angry when a friend hurts me, I can choose to talk to them calmly.

Instead of stealing what I want, I can choose to be honest and earn it properly.

When I face something difficult, I can choose courage instead of running away.

The more often we make these kinds of choices,

the more our free will leads us down the path of good rather than evil.

Free will is like the steering wheel of life.

Just as the direction you turn the wheel determines where a car goes,

our choices determine what kind of world we create.

Evil may be born from free will,

but how we use that free will is entirely up to us.

Remember, even a small choice you make today

can change your life and the world of tomorrow.
