유세프 라티프
신화학자 조지프 캠벨(Joseph Campbell)은
“그대는 길 하나 없는 어두컴컴한 숲 속으로 들어간다. 그것도 가장 어두운 곳을 골라서. 그 곳에 만약 길이 있다면 그것은 분명 다른 누군가의 길이다. 그대는 아직 자신의 길을 찾지 못했다. 만약 다른 누군가의 길을 따라간다면 그대의 자신의 잠재력을 깨닫지 못하리라.”
라고 말하며 ‘블리스(bliss)를 따라’ 사는 삶이 온전한 삶이라고 말합니다.
캠벨이 말하는 '블리스'란 온전하게 현재에 존재하는 느낌, 진정한 나 자신이 되기 위해 해야 하는 것을 하고 있을 때 느끼는 '희열감'을 말합니다. 만일 이 희열을 따라간다면 필연적으로 순탄치 않은 삶을 살게 됩니다. 인생은 미로를 헤매며 숱한 도전과 시련을 헤쳐 나가야 하는 '신화적 모험'으로 바뀌는 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 캠벨은 전 세계의 신화들이 우리에게 블리스를 따라 모험을 떠날 것을 종용하고 있음을 보여줍니다. 외적인 모험이든, 내면적인 모험이든 어둠이 짙게 깔린 숲으로 홀로 들어가는 모험을 통해 삶은 더욱 깊어지고 '충만한 존재감'을 느끼며 살게 된다는 것입니다.

유세프 라티프
Yusef Abdul Lateef (born William Emanuel Huddleston; October 9, 1920 – December 23, 2013)는 미국의 여러 악기를 다루는 재즈 뮤지션이며 작곡가이고 1950년대 미국의 이슬람 민속단체(the Ahmadiyya Community)의 뛰어난 인물이다.
비록 그가 다루는 메인 악기는 테너 색소폰과 플루트이지만 그는 또한 재즈에서는 드문 오보에와 바순을 연주했고 대나무 플루트와 shanai, shofar, xun, arghul, koto와 같은 서양 스타일이 아닌 여러 악기를 사용했다. 그는 동양 뮤직을 재즈와 섞은 혁신자로 오랫동안 알려져 왔다. 라티프의 뉴욕 타임즈 사망기사에서 Peter Keepnews는 라티프는 월드 뮤직이 그 이름을 갖기 전 이미 월드 뮤직을 연주했다라고 썼다.
라티프는 Herb Boyd와 함께 콜라보로 썼던 그의 자서전격인 The Gentle Giant과 단편 컬렉션인 Spheres and Rain Shapes과 A Night in the Garden of Love and Another Avenue란 이름의 두 소설을 포함한 여러 권의 책을 써 출판했다.
그의 레코드 레이블인 YAL Records와 함께 그는 음악 출판 회사인 Fana Music을 소유했다. 그는 파나를 통해 그의 작품들을 발표했고 이것은 그의 블루스와 많은 오케스트라 작곡집을 포함한 것이다. 2010년에 그는 1982년 설립된 독립 정부 기관인 the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)로부터 재즈 부분에 가장 높은 명예가 있다고 인정되는 재즈 마스터들에게 수여되는 상(the lifetime Jazz Master Fellowship Award)을 받았다.
라티프는 2013년 12월 23일 아침에 93세를 일기로 그의 아들과 아내 옆에서 사망했다.
