1970년이면 내가 초등학교 1학년 쯤이었을까? 신기하다. 리뷰를 읽고 들어서 일까? 중간 중간 밍거스의 목소리를 들을 수 있어, 마치 Back to the past를 한 것처럼 웃음이 났다. 이렇게 심각하게 녹음을 하기 위해 연주를 했던 연주자들의 생생함이 상상되어지다니, 그들은 누구도 이미 지상에 남아있지 않겠지만 그들이 연주한 음악은 이렇게 후대의 누군가에게 기쁨으로, 다가 왔다는 것을 알게되면 아마 하늘의 별로 환생했을 연주자들은 오늘 밤 빙긋 미소지을 것 같다.

Charles Mingus in Paris: The Complete America Session은 미국 베이스 연주자이며 작곡가며 밴드리더인 Charles Mingus의 2장짜리 컴필레이션 음반이다. 이 음반은 1970년에 파리에서 녹음했고 처음엔 Blue Bird and Pithycanthropus Erectus이란 이름으로 레이블 French America에서 발매했다. 이 컴필레이션 음반은 2006년에 레이블 Sunnyside에서 재발매했고 모든 재 발매된 트랙이 한 시디에 그리고 두 번째 시디에는 이 세션의 불완전하고 잘못된 연주를 보여주는 트랙을 추가했다.

The music on Charles Mingus' In Paris: The Complete America Session은 원래 Reincarnation of a Lovebird로서 몇 군데 레이블에 의해서 정식으로 재발매된 것을 미국에서 다시 두 개의 분리된 LPs로 재이슈한 것이다. (레이블 Candid를 위해 만든 같은 제목의 초기 앨범과 혼동하지 않도록) 어떤 스튜디오에서의 녹음도 하지 않은 채 5년을 보내던 밍거스는 이 1970년의 세션을 위해 충분히 준비했다. 식스텟을 구성하기 위해 노련한 연주자들인 피아노에 Jaki Byard, 드럼에 Dannie Richmond, 알토 색소폰에 Charles McPherson, 그리고 새롭게 테너 색소폰에 Bobby Jones, 트럼펫에 Eddie Preston 을 추가했다. 초점은 대부분 "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," "Pithecanthropus Erectus," "Peggy's Blue Skylight,"에다가 18분이나 계속되면서도 여전히 열기가 식지 않은 찰리 파커의 느리면서도 불루지한 명반인 "Blue Bird"를 포함한 초기의 작업을 연주하는 데 힘을 쏟았다. 두 개의 더 짧은 작업은 다르게 연주 되었다.
