클린트 이스트우드 Clint Eastwood (1930년 5월 31일), 저에겐 황야의 무법자로부터 시작한 서부 영화 속의 그가 익숙했죠. 시니컬할 표정 속의 우수에 찬 눈동자를 가진 고독한 마초적 대명사, 한 때는 배우로서 그를 좋아했지만, 이제 그는 감독으로 더 유명해졌네요.
배우, 감독 영화 제작이라는 경력이외에 그는 오디오와 재즈의 열광자이고, 또한 피아니스트이, 작곡가이기도 하죠. 그는 젊은 시절, 그러니까 1959년에 레이블 Cameo에서 Cowboy Favorites란 앨범을 발매하기도 했지만 결코 음악가로서 성공은 하지 못했네요.
"A man must know his limitations." 그의 어록 중의 하나로 평생 아마추어 연주자인 자신의 한계를 인정하는 대신, 자신의 아들인 Kyle Eastwood가 재즈 베이시스트이자 작곡가로 성장하도록 격려했으며 또한 그의 영화 속에서 음악에 대한 자신의 열정을 드러내게 되죠.
그의 감독으로서의 데뷔작, Play Misty for Me (1971/어둠 속에 벨이 울릴 때) 뿐만 아니라, Honkytonk Man (1982/고독한 방랑자), Bird (1988), Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988), White Hunter Black Heart (1990/추악한 사냥꾼), A Perfect World(1993), The Bridges of Madison County (1995) Mystic River(2003), Million Dollar Baby(2004) Flags of Our Fathers(2006), Grace Is Gone(2007) Changeling(2008) 등의 영화에 재즈곡들을 배경으로 하고도 모자라 음악을 관장하고 직접 자신인 작곡한 곡들을 삽입하기도 하죠. 특히 1999년의 재즈 보컬 Diana Krall의 앨범 When I Look in Your Eyes의 트랙 중 Why Should I Care" 은 Carole Bayer Sager, Linda Thompson-Jenner와 공동 작곡으로 유명하답니다.
